Google Business Profile suspended: how to fix it

Google Business Profile suspended? How to fix it starts with working out why, because the appeal only succeeds if the reason is gone. Google rarely tells you in detail. The notice usually says the profile does not follow its guidelines and leaves you to guess. In practice the causes are few, and most owners find theirs on this list.

• The address. A virtual office, a coworking desk you do not staff, a PO box, or a home address shown publicly when customers never visit it. Home-based businesses are allowed, but as a service-area business with the address hidden.
• The name. Extra words added to rank, such as "Salon Makati Best Rebond Keratin". The profile name has to match your signage and your permit.
• The category. A category that describes what you want to rank for rather than what you are, or a string of loosely related extras.
• Sudden edits to key details. Changing the name, address, category and phone number in one sitting looks, to Google's systems, like someone hijacking the profile.

• Fake engagement. Reviews bought, swapped with other shops, or offered in exchange for a discount.

Google does not use these words, but owners and consultants do, and the difference changes what you expect. Open a private browser window, sign out, and search your business name on Google Maps.

If the profile still shows to customers but you have lost the ability to manage it, or your edits never go live, that is usually called a soft suspension. The problem is often tied to the manager or to verification. The shop is still visible, which buys you time.

If the profile has vanished from Maps and Search, reviews and photos included, that is a hard suspension. Google has taken the listing itself down. This one costs you customers every day, so it is worth appealing carefully but quickly. The wording in Google's notice, whether it says suspended, disabled or restricted, tells you more than any label, so screenshot it before you change anything. Put the profile back in line with the rules first, then appeal. Remove keywords from the name so it reads exactly as your signage does. Choose the one category that describes the business, the way the Google Business Profile optimization guide explains it, and cut any extras you cannot defend. If customers do not come to your address, switch to a service area and hide it.

Then stop editing. Every change made while a suspension is under review is one more thing a reviewer has to reconcile, and a profile that keeps shifting looks less trustworthy, not more.

Appeals go through Google's Business Profile appeals tool, which you reach from the suspension notice in your profile or from the Business Profile help centre. Sign in with the Google account that owns or manages the profile.

• Pick the suspended profile in the tool. It shows the current status and any earlier decision.
• Write a short, factual note: what the business is, where it operates, and what you corrected. No anger, no long history.
• Upload your evidence. Clear photos or scans beat a phone photo of a crumpled page.
• Submit once, then check the status in the same tool. Sending several appeals does not move you up a queue.

Google wants proof that the business is real, that it operates where the profile says, and that you are the one running it. The name and address on every document should match the profile, down to the unit number, building and barangay.

• Mayor's permit or business permit from your city or municipal hall, for the current year.
• DTI business name registration for a sole proprietor, or SEC registration for a corporation or partnership.
• BIR Certificate of Registration (Form 2303) showing the registered address.
• A lease contract, or a Meralco, water or internet bill in the business name at that address.
• Photos, or a short unbroken video, of the storefront with the signage readable, the interior and the counter or equipment. In a mall or food hall, show the route from the entrance to your stall.

It varies more than Google's help pages suggest. Some profiles come back within a few days. Others take two to four weeks, and a few take longer when Google asks for more evidence. Nobody can promise you a date, including anyone who offers to speed it up for a fee.

When a profile comes back, its reviews and photos usually return with it. Rankings can take a little while to settle.

If the appeal is denied, that decision is often final for that suspension, so make the first appeal complete rather than fast. If you believe the decision was wrong, the Business Profile support team is the next step, with the same documents ready.

The worst move is creating a new profile for the same business. It looks like an attempt to dodge the suspension, it can get the new one suspended too, and it leaves you with two listings to untangle later. Also avoid buying reviews to make up for lost ones, swapping managers around, or paying someone who claims a contact inside Google.

Keep serving customers through the channels you still have: your Facebook page, your Viber or Messenger replies, and signage outside. The suspension is about a listing, not your business.
