Why Your Business Isn't Showing on Google Maps

The eight reasons a Philippine business does not appear on Google Maps, in the order worth checking — verification, categories, proximity, duplicates and suspension.

Key takeaways

  • Searching your own business name from your own shop is the least reliable test there is.
  • Most cases are one of three things: unverified, wrongly categorised, or a duplicate profile competing with itself.
  • Proximity is the strongest factor you cannot change — you will not rank across the whole city.
  • If the profile was suspended you will not be told clearly. Check for the banner.

First, test it properly

Before assuming something is broken, rule out the most common false alarm. Google personalises results heavily: your own device, signed into your own account, standing inside your own shop, is the one place in the world where your business always appears. That tells you nothing.

Test in an incognito window, signed out, from somewhere else — a kilometre away is enough. Better still, ask someone across town to search the same words a customer would use, not your business name. "Barbershop near me" is the real test; "Kuya Jun's Barbershop" only tells you your profile exists.

Also separate the two different problems. Not appearing for your own name is a serious fault. Not appearing for a generic search from four barangays away is normal and is a ranking question, not a fault.

The eight causes, in order

Work down this list. In our experience the first three account for the large majority of cases.

  • Not verified. An unverified profile can exist and still not show in results. Open your Business Profile and look for a prompt to verify; until that is done, nothing else matters.
  • Wrong primary category. The primary category is the single strongest lever you control. A carinderia listed as "Restaurant" instead of "Filipino Restaurant" competes in a much larger, wrong pool.
  • A duplicate profile. Two listings for the same shop split your reviews and confuse Google about which is real. This is extremely common where a previous owner, a franchise, or a delivery aggregator created a listing years ago.
  • Suspended. If your profile was suspended you will usually see a banner in the dashboard, but the wording is easy to miss. A suspended profile disappears entirely from Maps.
  • Proximity. Google weighs how close the searcher is. If you are in Parañaque you will not appear for someone searching in Quezon City, no matter what you do.
  • Thin profile. Missing hours, no photos, no description and no services gives Google little reason to show you over a complete competitor.
  • Address hidden or wrong. Service-area businesses that hide their address rank differently. A pin dropped on the wrong side of the street can also cost you.
  • Too new. A profile verified last week has almost no prominence yet. Six to twelve weeks of activity is a normal ramp.

Duplicates deserve their own section

Duplicate listings are the single most under-diagnosed problem we see on Philippine profiles, and the most damaging, because your reviews get split between two entries and neither accumulates enough to rank.

Search your business name in Google Maps and look carefully for near-matches: old spellings, a former name, a branch listed at your address, or a listing created by a delivery platform. Check variations of the street name too — Filipino addresses are written many ways and duplicates hide behind that.

When you find one, claim it and request a merge rather than deleting it. Deleting the wrong one throws away the reviews attached to it.

Proximity, and what it means for your expectations

Of the three things Google says decide local ranking — relevance, distance and prominence — distance is the one you cannot argue with. A customer standing in Makati is shown Makati businesses.

The practical consequence is that "am I ranking?" is not a question with one answer. You rank differently on every street. Checking from a single point, usually your own shop, produces a false picture in both directions: it flatters you at home and terrifies you from across town.

What you can control is winning your own neighbourhood decisively — the few hundred metres where most of your walk-in customers actually search from. That is a realistic goal. Ranking across Metro Manila is not.

If it is suspended

Suspensions usually follow a change: editing the business name to add keywords, changing the address, switching categories repeatedly, or a mismatch between your listed address and what Google can verify.

Do not create a new profile. A second listing for a suspended business tends to get suspended too, and you lose the review history permanently.

Fix whatever triggered it — put the name back to the real signage name, correct the address to something verifiable — then file for reinstatement with evidence: photos of the storefront with signage, a utility bill, the business permit. Expect it to take weeks, and expect to appeal more than once.

Frequently asked

Why does my business show on my phone but not my customer's?

Because you are signed in, you have visited your own profile many times, and you are standing at the address. Google personalises results on all three. Always test signed out, in incognito, from somewhere else.

How long after verifying will I appear on Google Maps?

Usually within a few days for searches of your business name. Appearing for competitive generic searches like "restaurant near me" takes longer — typically a couple of months of reviews, photos and complete information.

Can I rank in a city I am not located in?

Essentially no, for map results. Distance from the searcher is a core ranking factor. A service-area business can cover a radius, but you cannot appear in the map pack for a neighbourhood far from your verified address.

Does changing my category reset my ranking?

No, but change it once, deliberately, to the most specific accurate option. Repeatedly switching categories is a pattern associated with suspensions.
