Key takeaways
- The median branch in our sample of 1,646 Metro Manila franchise and chain branches rates 4.0 stars on Google. 47% of rated branches are below 4.0.
- Inside one brand, the best and worst branch are typically 2.9 stars apart. Counting only branches with 20 or more reviews, the gap is still 1.9 stars.
- Thin reviews make shaky ratings: 36% of branches have fewer than 10 reviews, and 110 of the 115 perfect 5.0 branches have under 10.
- In 17 of the 20 brands we could compare, branches with 50+ reviews rate higher than the same brand's branches with under 20.
Franchise branch ratings: the short version
How do franchise branch ratings look on Google Maps when you check every branch, not just the flagship? A customer sees one branch's rating, not the brand's average. So on 19 October 2026 we pulled 1,646 operating branches of 35 chain brands in Metro Manila from Google's Places data, across seven categories from food carts to clinics.
The Philippines has roughly 120,000 to 130,000 franchise outlets, according to a Daily Tribune report on April 2025 figures. Our sample covers well-known names in one metro, not the whole market. The headline numbers:
- Median branch rating: 4.0 stars. 47% of the 1,516 rated branches are below 4.0, and 22% are at 4.5 or higher.
- 34 of the 35 brands have at least one branch below 4.0. 32 have at least one below 3.5.
- The median gap between a brand's best and worst branch is 2.9 stars. The middle half of a typical brand's branches spans about 0.7 stars.
- 36% of branches have fewer than 10 reviews, and 130 branches (8%) have no rating at all.
- Branches with 100 or more reviews have a median of 4.2, with 27% below 4.0. Branches with fewer than 20 have a median of 3.7, with 60% below 4.0.
How we collected the data, and what it can't tell you
The full method, so anyone can check or repeat it.
- Source: the Google Places API (Text Search). One query per brand, "[brand] Metro Manila", restricted to a rectangle around Metro Manila (latitude 14.35 to 14.80, longitude 120.90 to 121.15).
- We kept results whose name matches the brand and whose status is operational. We did not visit or call any branch.
- Up to 60 branches per brand. Google's Text Search returns at most 60 results across all pages, so at least 14 brands hit that cap (17 returned 58 or more branches) and we saw only part of their network.
- Rating is Google's average star rating as shown on Maps. Review count is Google's total number of ratings for that branch.
- One moment in time: collected on 19 October 2026. Ratings change every week.
- The rectangle reaches a little past Metro Manila: 34 branches (2%) are in neighbouring towns in Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal.
- Category figures pool branches, so a brand with 60 branches weighs more than one with 15.
- The sample does not separate franchised branches from company-owned ones, and the 35 brands were picked as well-known chains, not drawn at random.
- Places data does not show whether a branch replies to reviews, so this study says nothing about replies.

What stands out in the category numbers?
Coffee and tea and bakeries rate highest, at a median of 4.2. Restaurants collect by far the most reviews: 133,284 of the 189,433 ratings in the sample (70%). Kiosks, pharmacies and clinics are the opposite, with most branches too thin for the rating to mean much.
Read the clinic line with care. It pools only three brands, so it describes those 92 branches, not clinics in general.
Finding 1: one brand, very different branches
Franchising sells a system: the same menu, training and look. On Google Maps it looks uneven. The median brand's best and worst branches are 2.9 stars apart. 34 of 35 brands have at least one branch below 4.0, and 31 of 35 have at least one at 4.5 or higher. Most brands have both.
Part of that gap is noise from branches with a handful of reviews, so we rechecked it using only branches with 20 or more reviews. Across the 28 brands with at least five such branches, the median gap is still 1.9 stars, and 24 of those 28 brands have a gap of a full star or more. Among the 14 brands with at least five branches of 100+ reviews, it is 1.1 stars. By category, the median best-to-worst gap is 2.3 stars for coffee and tea brands and 2.8 for beauty and wellness brands.
For a customer, that gap is the difference between a branch they walk into and one they skip. Google also says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking.
Finding 2: few reviews, extreme ratings
An average of five reviews swings with every new one. Median rating and share below 4.0, by review count:
- No reviews: 130 branches (7.9% of the sample).
- 1 to 9 reviews: 468 branches (28.4%); median 3.7; 56% below 4.0; 30% at 4.5+.
- 10 to 19 reviews: 196 branches (11.9%); median 3.7; 67% below 4.0.
- 20 to 49 reviews: 284 branches (17.3%); median 3.9; 50% below 4.0.
- 50 to 99 reviews: 143 branches (8.7%); median 4.1; 38% below 4.0.
- 100 to 499 reviews: 313 branches (19.0%); median 4.2; 30% below 4.0.
- 500 or more reviews: 112 branches (6.8%); median 4.2; 19% below 4.0.
Why a thin rating is a coin toss
Branches with 1 to 9 reviews sit at the edges: a quarter are below 3.0 and a quarter at 4.8 or higher. Of the 115 branches with a perfect 5.0, 110 have fewer than 10 reviews. The standard deviation of ratings falls from 1.2 stars for branches with 1 to 9 reviews to 0.46 for branches with 100 or more.
Finding 3: branches with more reviews rate higher, even inside one brand
Branches with 100+ reviews have a median of 4.2, against 3.7 for branches with under 20. That could just mean better brands get more reviews, so we compared branches within each brand. In 20 brands with at least three branches in each group, the branches with 50 or more reviews had a higher median rating than the same brand's branches with under 20 reviews in 17 cases. The median difference was 0.45 stars.
This does not prove that more reviews cause a better rating; a well-run branch gets more customers and so more reviews. A likely explanation, which our data can't test: when few people review, the ones who do are often the ones with a problem. Asking every customer brings in the ordinary visits too.
The pattern is clearest in beauty and wellness: a median of 4.7 for branches with 100+ reviews (11% below 4.0, 72 branches) against 3.1 for those under 20 (74% below 4.0, 87 branches). Coffee and tea shows the same shape: 4.3 (8% below 4.0) against 3.9 (53% below 4.0).
Finding 4: many reviews don't fix a weak branch
Restaurants have the most-reviewed branches in the sample, with a median of 224 reviews each, and only 7% have under 10. Yet 42% of rated restaurant branches are below 4.0, and just 8% reach 4.5. Among restaurant branches with 100+ reviews, 35% are still below 4.0.
Lots of reviews make a rating stable. They don't lift it. What lifts it happens at the counter.
Which brands have the most consistent branches?
Some brands keep their branches close together. Six brands meet all three of our tests: at least 15 branches in the sample, a median of 20 or more reviews per branch, and under 1 in 5 rated branches below 4.0. Their ratings rest on many customers, not a few.
- Bruno's Barbers: 41 branches, median rating 4.3.
- Belo Medical Group: 15 branches, median rating 4.8.
- Coffee Project: 24 branches, median rating 4.3.
- Bo's Coffee: 24 branches, median rating 4.6.
- Serenitea: 43 branches, median rating 4.2.
- Max's Restaurant: 55 branches, median rating 4.2.
What it means if you're buying a franchise
A brand's reputation tells you little about the branch you will run. Our guide to how franchising works covers the rest of the homework, and the guide to comparing coffee franchises shows this check for one category.
- Open 10 branches on Google Maps, including some far from head office, and note each rating and review count. Our franchise review scorecard has the steps.
- Treat any rating with fewer than 20 reviews as unknown, not as good or bad.
- Look at the spread among branches with 20+ reviews. In our sample a 1.9-star gap is typical. A brand whose well-reviewed branches sit within a star of each other runs a tighter system.
- Ask the franchisor which branches are below 4.0, what they did about them, and who answers reviews at each branch.
- Remember that your branch starts at zero reviews. Make its review link before opening day with the free review link generator.
What it means for a brand's operations team
The brand average hides the branches customers actually see. Five habits close the gap.
- Track every branch every week: rating, new reviews, unanswered reviews and the top complaint. An area manager's weekly scorecard is the natural place for it.
- Start with the bottom quarter of branches that have 20+ reviews. Their ratings are real, and they are the ones losing customers today.
- Grow thin branches by asking every customer for a review, the same way at every branch. Google's review policy bans offering anything in return, asking only happy customers, pressuring customers on the premises and staff review quotas.
- Reply at every branch, bad reviews first. The next customer reads the reply too.
- Read the 1 to 3 star reviews across branches for repeats. The same complaint at several branches points to the system: the recipe, the supplier, the equipment or the training.

Frequently asked
- What is a good Google rating for a franchise branch?
- In our sample of 1,516 rated Metro Manila branches, the median is 4.0 stars and 22% are at 4.5 or higher. So a branch at 4.5+ is in roughly the top fifth. Check the review count too: below 20 reviews, a handful of customers decide the rating.
- Why do branches of the same franchise have different ratings?
- Customers rate the branch they visited: its staff, manager, waiting time, cleanliness and equipment. Branches also differ in how many customers leave reviews, and a thin rating swings with each one.
- How many reviews does a branch need before its rating means something?
- There is no official number. In our data, ratings of branches with 1 to 9 reviews are spread far wider than those of branches with 100 or more. Treat a rating with fewer than 20 reviews as unknown.
- Can I use these figures in an article or report?
- Yes. Cite this page with its date (19 October 2026) and the method: Google Places data on 1,646 operating branches of 35 chain brands in and around Metro Manila, up to 60 branches per brand.
